At this point, you’ve probably done everything to make your hair look great. You buy the most expensive bottles of shampoo you can find, visit the salon almost every week and watch YouTube tutorials on hair care. But no matter what you do, your hair ends up looking duller by the day.
Just like in skincare, mistakes are bound to happen when taking care of your hair. You may think that your hair care routine is nourishing your strands, but in reality, they’re doing more harm than good. However, the good news is that these mistakes are easily avoidable.
Here at The Colorist Aesthetics and Spa we’ve compiled a list of hair care mistakes you need to avoid. Check them out below:
Using products with harsh chemicals
One of the worst ways to ruin your hair is to carelessly use hair products containing harmful chemicals. This includes sulfates, parabens and formaldehyde, among others. Typically, these harsh chemicals are found in extremely cheap products, so be extra careful.
When buying hair products, you should read the labels carefully and look at the ingredients. As much as possible, buy the ones that say sulfate-free to keep your hair in its natural state.
Washing your hair every day
There’s a common misconception that washing your hair every day is the default. However, this is not entirely true. When you wash your hair way too much, you remove the healthy oils from your scalp. As a result, your hair will look lifeless and in some cases, you may end up with an irritated scalp.
This isn’t to say that you should not shower on a daily basis. A rinse of warm water can already remove the dust, dirt and grime building up on your hair.
As a rule of thumb, wash your hair every other day to keep it shiny and healthy. But if your hair already looks greasy, use a dry shampoo instead to absorb the oil and add volume.
Not washing your hair enough
Not washing your hair enough is just as bad as over-shampooing. When you fail to keep your hair clean, there’s a great chance that you’ll end up with scalp problems. The sebum will start to build up, blocking the hair follicle and preventing consistent hair growth.
Moreover, the scalp will feel too itchy that when you scratch it, it can lead to microabrasions. It can cause bacterial infections and fungi that can extremely harm your hair in many ways.
Exposing your hair too much to the sun
Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from UV rays. Once you make it a habit to expose your hair to the sun, it can get rid of healthy oils and lead to irreparable damage in the long run.
Before going out, make sure that you apply a conditioning spray with Uv protection to keep your strands safe from the heat. If you want, you can also wear a stylish hat for maximum protection!
